The Name "Scoodic"Many years ago, the Maliseet Indians used to come and fish salmon in the St. Croix River. They would set up a temporary camp beside the River and build smoke houses to smoke the salmon. The word "SCOODIC" is an Indian word meaning "FIRE AND WARMTH". The Town of St. Stephen was started on the site of the Indian Camp. The older people in the community, most of them gone now, used to call St. Stephen, "SCOODIC". |
